Private Hill Rankin

Hill Rankin was born in Belfast around 1883, the son of stone-cutter Hill Rankin. At the time of the 1901 Census he was living in Factory Row, Drumreany, Castlecaulfield, County Tyrone, at the home of  his grandfather, army pensioner James McCord, and working as a linen winder. Two years later he was living at 109 Tennent Street, Belfast, and working as a plater's helper. On 21 June that year he married Emiline Edgar in St Anne's Church of Ireland Parish Church, Belfast. At the time of the 1911 Census the couple were living at 48 Westland Street with their two surviving children (two others having died).

Rankin's wife Emiline died on 7 June 1918 and on 26 August that year he married Sarah Steed in St Anne's Parish Church.

Between 3 and 11 October 1918 Rankin enlisted in the North Irish Horse (Corps of Hussars No.72181). He was demobilised on 7 February the following year.

He died in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast on 30 October 1946 and is buried in the City Cemetery, Glenalina Extension.
